Friday, July 18, 2008:
We had a great last day! The weather was beautiful, the fishing was pretty good, and we just enjoyed being at Birch Villa. We took Leah & Chloe over to Pike Bay in the morning and early afternoon and caught 17 fish (16 perch, 1 rock bass). That brought our total take-home fish number up to an even 100! We spent the afternoon and evening cleaning up, packing, taking apart the boat, doing laundry, etc. The kids enjoyed another treasure/scavenger hunt, and the chocolate malt cups they all got afterwards. They also got to go for one last round of tubing with Karrie and Landen (oh, and Ranger was in the boat too!). We just said good-bye to our neighbors (2 doors down)--Harold and Roz Watnemo (sp?) from the Fargo-Moorhead area. We just started to get to know them a little this week. Their daughter was working on a very interesting art project involving taking pictures of girls in wedding dresses while tubing, playing pool, and other settings. She's been working on this for awhile. She packed 15-20 wedding dresses! We're looking forward to seeing/hearing more about the finished product next year.

That's about it for our last day. We will leave bright and early in the morning, so I need to wrap this up for another year. Good-bye from Cass Lake!

Lazy Days, Crazy Days...

Thursday, July 17, 2008:
As our vacation nears its end, we are beginning to savor every moment. We started the day with a fishing trip to Pike Bay with Tom (of course, he's our driver), Linda (of course, she's the guide), Seth & Luke. We lowered our standards a bit and decided it was okay to keep 8" perch (before this our cut-off had been 9"), so we ended up with quite a basket-full, 20 perch and 2 rock bass. We headed back in by 12:30 so Tom could get all the fish cleaned and we could get over to Walker for a little Crazy Days shopping. We picked up a few bargains and enjoyed the fun of the good, old-fashioned sidewalk sale, still alive and well in Minnesota.

The stores closed early (about 5:00) so we headed for dinner. We wanted to take the kids to Pepper's (a place right on Leech Lake that Tom and Linda had eaten at a couple of times 2-3 years ago). But when we went to look for it, we found that it had been replaced by a new apartment building and a new upscale restaurant called "The 502." It was a bit pricey to take the whole gang to (but Tom and Linda might try it in the future on their own), so we opted instead for Cafe' Zona Rosa's, a Mexican restaurant we had also considered trying. We were not disappointed. The food and service were excellent and the prices were reasonable. We arrived home early enough for Tom, Seth, Luke & Leah to hit the Mi-Ge-Zi bike trail before dark. Linda and Chloe went to the lodge to hang out. And that pretty much sums up another great day at one of our favorite places!

Walkin' on Sunshine! (and thru puddles)

Wednesday, 7/16/2008:
We woke up to a gray, overcast day with rain in the forecast all day. We're still debating whether to try to get some fishing in before the rain starts or not. In the meantime, I'll catch up on my blogging...

Well, we never did get around to fishing, even though the sun did peek out several times in between showers throughout the day. After a lazy day around the cabin and lodge (except for Tom who took a bike ride), we loaded everyone up in van and went to Bemidji to catch the 5:00 show of "Wall-E," Disney's newest Pixar movie. Linda passed on the movie so she could have a little yarn-shopping time at the Ben Franklin downtown. Everyone gave the movie a "thumbs-up" although they said it was not what they expected. After the show we checked out several possible restaurants, and ended up back at the old stand-by: The Canal House at Stoney Point. Once again, we were not impressed as the service was slow and food just average. When we got back, Seth & Luke raced to the lodge to join the "Texas Hold 'Em" competition again. Luke ended up being "lucky Luke" as he came in 2nd, and won $40 (having paid $5 to play). The boys were both quite excited.

Tuesday, 7/15/2008:
What a great day! This was our best day yet in terms of the weather. We finally had a day with just a little breeze (great for fishing) and lots of sun (great for sunning, swimming, etc.). Tom, Linda, Seth & Luke headed out for fishing in the morning and went over the the Allen's Bay/Potato Island area. We ended up with 10 perch and 4 rock bass after about 3 hours of fishing. In the afternoon, the kids read books, played games, did crossword and Sudoku puzzles, and played with friends (Chloe). Linda finished knitting the hat for Leah, and Tom cleaned fish and listened to his book on tape. Later, Chloe went tubing with Madeline's family and Karrie pulled our kids again with Landen. Leah played a little pool with Landen as well. After supper, Tom & Linda headed out for more fishing. We decided to try our luck on Strawberry bar, but we didn't find much--only 1 perch after an hour. So we came back over to the ridge off of the Star Island point. Our luck improved with 4 more perch in the next hour--still not great, but at least we had a bag of fish to freeze. That about wraps up another beautiful day at Birch Villa!

Alone again...

Monday, July 14, 2008:
After sleeping in this morning, we finally got out fishing with the girls at about 11:40. This was Chloe's first time out and things didn't start out too great. We decided to try Dick's Bay as we heard you could catch crappie there. After about 2 hours of fishing we had one keeper (a rock bass). The wind was kicking up so we went in between the Potato islands again to find some shelter. In the final hour we another 10 fish--5 rock bass, 4 perch and 1 crappie! Linda was so excited to haul in the first crappie we've ever caught in Cass Lake.

By the time we came in it was nearly 3:00 p.m. and it was hot! So we grabbed a quick lunch and hit the water. Linda gave canoeing lessons to Seth & Luke (it was apparent they needed them after watching them in the canoe races last week), and then did a little canoeing herself with Leah and then Chloe. Tom cleaned fish and then cooled off in the lake with a dip himself. Finally, the kids did some tubing with Landen behind the Nelson's boat. Tonight, it's hot dogs on the grill for supper and then off to Dairy Queen for a treat for everyone!

Sunday, July 13, 2008:
After heading off to the Bemidji Evangelical Free church again, we had to run a couple of errands (we got gas for $3.83--our lowest price so far this trip--what a deal!). We came home and had a spaghetti dinner and then just lazed around all afternoon: knitting (Linda's working on her first hat!), crocheting (Leah's working on a granny square vest), reading (Tom's on his 3rd & 4th books now), and playing games (the boys are into Poker and Chloe's into Mancala). Chloe also reconnected with her old friend Madeline. By evening the wind had died down enough to make fishing look good, so we headed out with Tom, Linda, Seth & Luke in the boat. Fishing right out in front of Birch Villa we were able to bring home 9 fish--nothing too big except for an 11-inch rock bass Tom caught. The girls stayed at home and found things to do in the cabin (Chloe is a bit addicted to cable TV and the Disney channel).

Saturday, July 12, 2008:
We said good-bye to Jared this a.m. as he left with Beth & Bill and gang. He decided to head home after only 1 week this year so he could spend some time at his girlfriend Amanda's lake house in Edwardsburg, and enjoy some down-time at home. Deb & Roy (& kids) and Uncle Roy & Aunt Sone & Paul also left this morning. However, we kept Luke with us so that Seth would have some "brother" company this week. He was quite excited when he found out that Luke would be staying an extra week. So today, the guys hung around the resort (Tom did the laundry for us!), while the girls went out shopping. We hit the Woolen Mills store for yarn, and then the Bemidji Mall. We were reunited for a fish dinner at the cabin and all stayed in to keep warm as it became very windy and chilly all afternoon and evening. We all watched the Disney movie "Sky High" to help pass the time away.

Friday, July 11, cont.
Well the storm DID come. It poured for 10-15 minutes and the winds really blew. We found out later that evening that the winds had blown down several trees, including many on the North side of the lake, one of which landed on Glen & Pat's boat. The tree was later removed, but damage had been done to both the boat and the trailer. They weren't sure if they would be able to take it home or not the next morning.

After the storm, we gave our kids some frozen pizza for supper and headed off to Tutto Bene's (an Italian restaurant the guy at the Winery had recommended) in downtown Bemidji, with Beth & Bill, for a very nice, relaxing and delicious dinner. We decided it beat Applebees (where Mom & Dad and Glen & Pat have gone the past few years--maybe we can change their tradition next year!). On our way home we stopped by Horseshoe to see the damaged boat and say good-bye to that half of the gang (as they'll be leaving in the morning).

Canoe races & rhubarb wine

Friday, 7/11/2008:
It gets windier every day. We woke up to white caps on the lake, and although the sun was shining, it was just too windy to fish. So Tom & Linda and Deb & Roy headed out to the ForestEdge Winery (north of Walker). We sampled many great wines, all made from fruits, including rhubarb (our favorite), blueberries, strawberries, chokeberries, etc. Since grapes can't grow in this climate, they use the fruits that they can grow. We had a really fun time. In the meantime, Beth & Bill took William, Nicole & Leah around Pike Bay on bikes, while Jared babysat the younger kids. When we arrived home, it still wasn't good fishing or skiing weather, so everyone found their own form of relaxation or fun around the resort. Tomorrow, all of our family leaves, and we will be on our own for the next week. The kids are all enjoying a scavenger hunt right now as we watch the weather channel in the lodge. A storm is coming from Bemidji and we are anxiously awaiting its arrival.

Thursday, 7/10/2008:
We woke up to a rainy, dreary morning, so we weren't too fired up about fishing. Linda and Deb chatted over a long cup of coffee while debating how to spend the day. By afternoon, Beth and her girls headed out to fish at Strawberry bar with mom and dad. We enjoyed watching the very exciting first-ever Birch Villa canoe races. We decided that Seth & Luke should take some canoeing lessons. Afterwards, Tom, Jared, Seth & Leah headed back to the Mi-Gi-Zi trail for another bike ride. Linda watched Chloe swim with her friends while knitting and listening to her book. Roy and Bill pulled the few remaining kids on tubes and skis.

After a quick supper, we headed out for fishing (Tom, Linda, Leah and Kara G.). We went back to the Potato islands in order to get out of the winds, and once again had a fair catch--5 perch and 5 rock bass. The best catch of the night was the 12-inch jumbo perch which came in with both Tom's and Linda's hooks in its mouth! (So who really caught it???) After fishing we came back home and enjoyed the bonfire for a few minutes.

Biking, Shopping, Gambling (what??) and Fishing...

Wednesday, 7/9/08:
Today, Wednesday, was a beautiful morning. Things warmed up nicely right away, and we headed out for fishing by late morning with Tom, Linda, Seth & Bill T. in the boat. We went back to the Potato island area, and after about 3 hours came home with 12 decent fish (some perch, some rock bass). The kids joined the little fishing contest in the harbor, and Kara G. was excited to catch the biggest fish, while William T. won the littlest fish award. Landon N. (the owner's son) won the most fish caught with 22! Grandma & Pat had come to join us, so after the contest we all headed for our cabins to stay dry during a brief downpour. After the sun came out the kids headed out for tubing, kneeboarding and skiing. I was assigned to child-care duties, so Zachary and I headed over to the lodge deck to work on this blog. He loves to talk and can pretty much entertain himself in any situation! It's getting overcast again, and the boat should be coming home soon, and then it will be off to make supper and nothing to do but enjoy some relaxation around the cabin/lodge tonight (maybe watch a video, read a book, knit, play a card game, etc.). Ahh...we're definitely getting into the vacation mode!

Tuesday, 7/8/08:
We woke up Tuesday to a gloomy, windy, cool morning. The thought of going out fishing just didn't sound too appealing, and so we lazed around the cabin most of the morning, watching our "Today Show," reading or listening to books, knitting, or sleeping (Jared). By about noon we had formulated a plan with the rest of the gang for some of the women and kids to go shopping in Walker, while some of the guys went golfing, fishing or biking. Tom opted for biking and went around the Mi-Gih-Ze trail. Seth opted for fishing with Roy & Luke, but didn't get too far due to the wind. Linda, Leah, Chloe & Jared opted for shopping with Beth and 3 of her kids (we also met up with Grandma, Pat, Deb, Aunt Sone & Erin when we got there). We found some cool things in Walker (including ice cream, of course!). Then at about 6:00, we headed over with Tom, Bill and the boys to eat supper at Zorbaz of Park Rapids (i.e. Rapidz). We loved the pizza and the kids had a great time.

We got back to the resort just in time for the boys to join in on the Texas Hold 'em competition. Unfortunately, neither one ended up doing so well, although Jared's gambling spirit could probably be the reason for this--just ask Seth! I don't think he'll be asking Jared to finish playing for him again next year. The girls enjoyed sleepovers with their cousins and Leah reportedly didn't get to sleep until about 1:30 a.m.

Here we are again...

Monday, 7/7/08
(I'm finally caught up to today!) This morning was a bit cool and dreary, but not bad weather for fishing, so after getting our license and bait at Froggy's, we finally headed out for the Potato Islands area by late morning. We only stayed out a couple of hours, as it started to get windy and looked like it was going to rain. We managed to catch about 10 perch (3 of them 11-inch ones), in our little trip, so we felt like we did okay. Seth and Leah came with us, and while Seth immediately got back in the groove of fishing, Leah had a harder time. It may take her awhile to remember why she thinks fishing is fun, as right now she claims it is "boring."

Everyone (the Gouwens, Terpstras & us) all headed out to the movie theatre in Bemidji for the 5:00 shows due to the rain which did eventually come. And by the time we arrived at the theatre, it was pouring buckets, just like last year! The girls, moms, plus William & Zachary, saw "Kit Kitredge, an American Girl," while the men and older boys saw "Get Smart." Everyone enjoyed their shows (the guys really came out laughing!). In the evening, some went out fishing (the rain had cleared), while others hung out at the lodge watching more movies (or blogging!), and others simply stayed in their cabins to read and relax.

Sunday, 7/6/08
Sunday we headed off to church with the whole gang. We went back to the Evangelical Free Church of Bemidji that we tried by ourselves last year. Everyone seemed to enjoy the service and coffee afterwards. We didn't mind the later 11:00 start time. Our big family picnic started around 2:00 here at Birch Villa. Everyone from Horseshoe came over and joined us, and we had our traditional pork chop fry with Aunt Sone's parsley bread, my potato casserole, and lots of other delicious side dishes. This year we had 28 people! In looking at last year's blog and photos though, it's apparent that one important person is missing--Aunt Hank. We notice her absense this year, and hope she is getting along okay at home in Oak Grove.

After the picnic everyone just relaxed, went swimming, tubing or skiing (behind Bill's or Uncle Roy's boats), and just enjoyed a beautiful, sunny, Sunday afternoon. Some headed out early for some fishing. We enjoyed a late night movie night with the Terpstra family in our cabin as we watched "The Emporer's New Groove." Overall, it was a great, relaxing day!

Saturday, 7/5/08
After having breakfast in the hotel, we hit the road at about 9:05, and decided to try a different route this year--through the twin cities instead of Duluth. We did this in hopes of meeting up with the rest of our gang who all spent the night in Coon Rapids, a superb of St. Paul. Turned out, they all left their hotel about 15-30 minutes before we got to that area, so we were trailing them. Beth & Bill (& kids), Deb & Roy (& kids), and Uncle Roy & Aunt Sone (& Paul), were all on their way to Birch Villa too. Mom & Dad, and Glen & Pat (& Brad, Jordan & Trevor) were on their way to Horseshoe Resort. We found gas for $3.89/gallon in this area, thanks to Mom & Dad's scouting for us. While we stopped for a quick lunch at Quizno's, others took their time at more leisurely restaurants or stopped for groceries, and we ended up being the first ones to arrive at Birch Villa, at 3:25 p.m. Our total trip time this year ended up being 14:30, including our 2 lunch stops.

We checked out the resort to see all the improvements since last year. The upstairs loft inside the lodge is finished, and the outside decks are now in use. The docks and boat ramp are also improved and expanded. In our cabin, we found a "new" leather sectional, and new quilts on the beds. This year Beth & Bill are in cabin #3, Uncle Roy & Aunt Sone are next to us again, and Deb & Roy are next to them. After unpacking and saying "hello" to everyone as they arrived, we ordered pizza for the kids at the lodge, and Tom & I headed to Bemidji for our big grocery run. We had a nice, quick supper first at the Ground Round, and then hit Wal-Mart.

Friday, 7/4/08
Today is the 4th of July, and we will celebrate our country's birthday by driving across it. We will touch on or drive through 5 states: Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, and tomorrow-- Minnesota! We're on our way to Birch Villa Resort again, in Cass Lake, MN, and this is the blog journaling our travels. This is our 4th year going to Cass Lake, and our 3rd year at Birch Villa. Everything went smoothly this year as we prepared to leave, and we were able to set out on Friday morning as planned, by about 10:50 a.m. We left our new dog, Jolie Belle, home with our house/pet sitter, Lillie L. She will be in good hands.

After stopping to drop off Jared's car in Lombard at Beth & Bill's house (he's coming home early with them), we had lunch at Culver's. We stopped for gas in Wisconsin Dells and paid $4.03/gallon. We arrived in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, by about 6:30 (WI time). This year we are staying at the Best Western Trail Lodge & Suites. We loved our huge room! The kids hit the pool while we waited for some pizza to arrive for supper. We found Jeff & Jim's pizza to be quite good. After supper we were all quite tired and even though we had planned on going to see fireworks, we settled for watching them out of our hotel window.
